Key Technical Differences from Dairy Cows

-
Black Skin & Heat: Buffaloes absorb 2x more solar radiation than white Holsteins. In the Gulf, shade is not optional; it is a survival requirement.
-
Milk Density: Buffalo milk has 7-9% Fat (vs 3.5% in cows). They require 20-30% more energy per kg of milk produced, but they eat less DMI (Dry Matter) as a % of body weight. The diet must be denser.
-
Horns & Bunk Space: Even "polled" buffaloes often have broad heads. Increase feed bunk space by 10-15% compared to cattle to prevent bullying.
-
No Wallows: In modern Gulf dairy farming, "wallows" (mud pools) are replaced by high-pressure showers/soakers to maintain hygiene and prevent mastitis while achieving the necessary evaporative cooling. Wallowing tanks must be provided if it is possible for the farmer to construct them.
-
Calf Mortality: Buffalo calves have higher mortality rates in heat. The "Wallowing" instinct develops early, so water trough management is critical to prevent drowning/fouling.
